DEALERSHIP POST

Proposal for SoEx Off-Site Graue Award

Dealership, a project by Lance Brewer and Emma Spertus

It was the best of times, it was the worst of times, it was 2008 and it was the end of an age. Looking at the difficulties that have plagued the economy and art market artists, Lance Brewer and Emma Spertus, propose to enliven a derelict outdoor lot in San Francisco by transforming it into a "dealership" of art. This project, titled Dealership, will involve a month-long exhibition of local and national artists working with photography, sculpture, and painting and the exhibition will be visible to the public 24 hours day. Brewer and Spertus will design outdoor architecture for the lot, reminiscent of fixtures and showcases used for commercial display. They will then commission a select group of artists to produce works in response to these fixtures as well as the theme and location of the exhibition.

The sketch

A empty lot in San Francisco

Lance Brewer and Emma Spertus recently exchanged studio visits, after which they identified shared artistic territory. Specifically, unusual constructions of photographic space, conceptually oriented projects, and an interest in using psychically charged environments for their own artistic purposes. Having both created image rich installations, it seems to them like a logical step to collaborate on an art-rich, conceptually-rich project larger in scale then they normally attempt. The outcome of this plotting is the proposal for Dealership.

I have been spending regular time in the studio, 'settling in' as Cybele said today. It feels good to play with a host of new ideas and influences.

two postcards a day

This is a project I started for Fun-a-day, an annual art challenge. As you can probably gather, I made two postcards a day. Very fun!
